Women and agriculture
Despite the fact that agriculture has been mechanized and commercialized, the role of women continues to be a major one, for which the reward and recognition is minimal. As for their present status, the reasons could be many, chief among them are: they stand in isolation both within the family and in the community. Their hard toiled labour is being consumed by the input purchase during the production phase, and exploited by the middle men at the time of marketing. To ensure a just financial return to their labour, and for deserving social recognition, they are being organized into groups & collectives; get them trained on the preparation & use of low cost eco friendly inputs & crop management techniques and step into collective/direct marketing. As of now, there are 25 JLGs from among the CBOs formed in the name of Parambaria Vithainilam Vivasaihal Federation. The members are being trained in azola cultivation, calf & goat rearing, cultivation of vegetables & greens and value addition & marketing of agriculture products. Apart from the lecture type and demonstration of these products & enterprises, we feel there is a need to place all these units & techniques, live in a farm – which could be called a Model farm – towards which, the works are in progress.
